We Accept Insurance
Insurance-covered nutrition counseling with in-network registered dietitians.
Understanding your insurance benefits
Your insurance benefits can help make nutrition care easier and more affordable.
Reduced out-of-pocket costs
Our nutrition counseling services are covered by many major insurance plans, which may result in little to no out-of-pocket cost to you.
Preventive care covered
Preventive care is often fully covered by our in-network insurance companies, meaning you won't have to pay out-of-pocket for these services.
Help navigating insurance
We’re happy to submit your claim to insurance and verify your benefits, so you understand your case and any potential costs before or after your visit.
Insurance coverage models for nutrition counseling
Insurance coverage for nutrition counseling varies by plan, condition, and provider network. Common scenarios include:
Full coverage under preventive care
Outcome
Some policies, particularly those compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA), fully cover nutrition counseling for conditions like diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure.
Full coverage with copay
Outcome
Many plans require policy holders to pay a portion of the fee, often ranging from $20 to $50 per visit, or a percentage of the total cost after meeting a deductible.
Condition-based reimbursement
Outcome
Some insurers only cover sessions prescribed by a physician for medically necessary conditions, such as gestational diabetes or high-risk pregnancies.
Out-of-network provider limitations
Outcome
If a dietitian nutritionist is outside the insurance network, reimbursement percentages drop significantly, or coverage may not apply at all. All of our providers are in-network with the major insurance providers.
Preparing for your visit
A few things to know about insurance coverage and your upcoming visit.
Verify your insurance benefits
To verify your nutrition coverage, call the number on the back of your medical insurance card and ask to speak with a representative from member services. Provide them with the full name of the MyorThrive dietitian with whom you have an appointment.
Ask the representative the following questions:
- Does my current insurance plan cover nutrition counseling (i.e., meeting with a registered dietitian)?
- Is my diagnosis covered? — You can get this diagnosis from your doctor. Or ask about Diagnosis Code Z71.3 which is Dietary Counseling.
- Is my procedure code covered? Registered Dietitians use the procedure codes 97802 for the first visit (and sometimes the second) and 97803 is all follow-up sessions.
- How many covered visits do I have per calendar year?
- What’s considered a calendar year for my current policy?
- Do I need to meet a deductible before my insurance will pay?
- Do I have a co-pay/co-insurance or deductible for nutrition services?
- Is MyorThrive, and my dietitian, a covered provider under my plan?
- Do I need a Primary Care Physician (PCP) referral?
* We’re happy to submit your claim to insurance; however, we cannot assume responsibility for the verification of your benefits. If the visit is not covered, then you will be expected to pay for the visit.
FAQ
We’ve got your answers.
Coverage and benefits can vary based on your specific diagnosis, insurance plan, and the codes used for services. To ensure accurate coverage, we verify your benefits with your insurance provider so that you know what services are covered and whether you need to pay any co-pays, co-insurance, or meet a deductible. Additionally, we check if your plan covers telehealth and in-person visits, and find out how many sessions are included. Common conditions that are covered include diabetes, preventive medicine, obesity, eating disorders and more. We’re currently in-network with Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, BCBS, Anthem, and Medicare.
If you choose a provider who is out-of-network, you may need to pay the full cost upfront, but you can often submit a super bill to your insurance for partial reimbursement. It’s important to check with your insurance provider to understand the benefits they offer for out-of-network care, including potential reimbursement rates and requirements.
Full payment is required at the time of service, with no insurance involvement. Contact us for information about rates.
